ABOUT OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE (OSINT)

Open Source Intelligence or OSINT, in one form or another, has been in existence as long as man has had the ability to communicate, travel and share knowledge. What we are now calling OSINT is evolved from man’s earliest efforts to accurately share actionable information with others in an effort to explain the events of the world around him in order to gain a survival advantage.

The leaders of yesterday’s hunting and gathering parties who gathered data, transformed that data into knowledge and shared this intelligence with others, were mankind’s first open source intelligence analysts. Open source intelligence, in its very basic form, is nothing more than people sharing applicable information which has been specifically tailored to provide an answer to any given question.

The innovations and technologies we currently utilize exponentially expand our abilities to gather, disseminate and share actionable intelligence, but the core purpose of OSINT remains true. That purpose being to share knowledge with each other to survive, grow and evolve as a species.

Both the intelligence communities and business communities utilize OSINT in various forms and compilations. What the intelligence community stamps classified at various levels and the business community stamps corporate classified is nothing more than compilations of OSINT products which bring to light vulnerability to the State or to the Corporation. Conservative estimates show that 90% of our “classified” information can show direct lineage to OSINT. This being said; it is not a far reaching statement to say that anyone utilizing powerful search engines and their intellect is capable of creating reports which would be labeled classified by any government agency or corporation.

The formal classification process of disseminated information is based on an individual(s) belief that the compiled report or information product exposes a vulnerability to the State or to the Corporation. The level of this classification is really just a matter of these entities perception of the scope and depth of that vulnerability.
